Early this morning (19th August), Mongolians thronged Chinggis Khaan airport to greet returning Rio Games silver-winning judoka D.Sumya. Officials from ‘Khilchin’ sport committee, the Mongolian Judo Association and the Uvs provincial administration were among those welcoming the young sportswoman home..
D.Sumya took away a silver medal at Rio 2016, Mongolia's first ever medal in the Olympic women’s judo category, instantly transforming the her into a national heroine. On 5th of August, she defeated Kaori Matsumo of Japan, the so-called "Assassin" – so named having won gold at the London 2012 Olympics in the first 25 seconds. Sadly, D.Sumya lost to Brazil's Rafaela Silva in the gold medal competition.
Over the years, Mongolia has won two Olympics gold, nine silver and 13 bronze medals. D.Sumya thus, becomes the 25th Olympics medalist.
