’Zud’ alert: November temperature to fall to -47C in Mongolia

The coldest winter in 10 years awaits Mongolia. The Research Institute for Hydrology and Meteorology of Mongolia warns that temperatures will reach -47C between 17th-25th of November.

The National Emergency Commission led by U.Khurelsukh, Deputy Prime Minister met earlier today (15th November) to prepare contingency measures. P.Sergelen, Minister of Food, Agriculture and Light Industry, P.Gankhuu, Minister of Energy, D.Ganbat, Minister of Roads and Transportation, D.Oyunkhorol, Minister of Nature, Environment and Tourism and T.Badral, head of National Emergency Commission participated in the meeting.

Above average snowfall already covers in Mongolia over 30% of nation is expecting harsh winter. A 'zud' alert has been made for nine provinces such as Uvs, Dornod, Tuv, Khentii, Darkhan-Uul, most soums in Selenge, the northern parts of Zavkhan, the western parts of Khuvsgul and the eastern parts of Bulgan. A 'zud' is when the weather is so harsh, animals often starve to death when the thick, icy snow buries the grass or simply freeze because of the cold.
