The representatives of a South Korean company called on Ulaanbaatar Mayor G.Munkhbayar on Tuesday to discuss the possibility of helping the city construct a waste-to-energy incinerator that would generate heat for households in the city.

The need for heat and energy is one of the problems facing Ulaanbaatar, where half of Mongolia’s population resides. Countryside residents and herders have migrated to the capital in growing numbers in recent years, increasing population density, intensifying development, and putting a strain on city services.

City administrators say a waste-to-energy incinerator would solve two problems at once by reducing both the amount of garbage in the city and the need for residents to burn fuel to heat their homes.

The Mayor thanked the South Korean officials for their suggestion and asked city officials to study the feasibility of cooperating with them on the project.
