On Wednesday (9 June), Mongolians went to the polls amid the pandemic to vote for their 6th President. The ballots have been counted. The news is that U.Khurelsukh from ruling Mongolian People’s Party has been elected as President of Mongolia after winning 820 thousand votes; S.Erdene from the Democratic Party received 72 thousand votes and D.Enkhbat from the Right Person Electorate Coalition won 242 thousand votes.
U.Khurelsukh will work as President for a six-year term until 2027 in accordance with constitutional reform approved by parliament in 2019.
Turnout has been declining for years; yesterday was significantly lower than in the previous election. The turnout was 52.78 percent. A total of 71680 voters out of 1.2 million cast a blank vote on their ballot papers.
The presidential election has attracted much attention from outside the country. For example, 11 foreign media agencies applied for reporting the election and observers from embassies of Great Britain, the USA and the EU as well as from the Philippines were present.
