Four Mongolians stage sit-in protest in evacuation plane

Yesterday (10 June), Mongolia repatriated 175 of its nationals from Nur-Sultan, city of Kazakhstan with a government-chartered flight at their request. However, four of the passengers disturbed the evacuation process for 30 minutes by staging a sit-in protest whilst still on board the evacuation plane at Buyant-Ukhaa international airport. According to one source, the four refused to get off the plane in protest to the mandatory quarantine measures for preventing the spread of coronavirus. Therefore, police officers had to use force to them to taking off the plane. Up to 10 police officers work for ensuring security and public order during the evacuation process.

A total of 1,097 Mongolians in Kazakhstan, have requested to return to Mongolia.

According to a decision made by the Government of Mongolia and the State Emergency Commission, six more charter flights are planned for this month to South Korea, India, Germany and another yet-to-be-announced destination as there are more than 10,000 Mongolians stranded abroad caused by COVID-19 border restrictions.
