Many believe that teeing the knot in the Year of the Rat is particularly auspicious. Therefore, the Wedding Palace in Ulaanbaatar had been expecting to hold a large number of marriage ceremonies this year. However, over 240 marriage ceremonies in the Wedding Palace have been cancelled due to coronavirus restrictions. Marriages, naturally, attract many guests; there has, therefore, been an increased risk of transmission of the virus. The Wedding Palace accepts bookings of marriage ceremonies two months before due date.
Traditionally, Mongolians mostly choose to hold weddings in the late summer months –July and August when livestock becomes fat and dairy production begins in earnest. For example, over 400 weddings were held in August, 2019.
