As countries try to stem the spread of coronavirus pandemic, tourists have cancelled travel plans amidst confusion over health risks, quarantine measures and possible disruption. In Mongolia, 70% of tourists who have booked travel to the country this year have cancelled their trips, according to a survey conducted by the Mongolian Tourism Association.
Mongolia received total of 577,000 tourists in 2019. In 2020, the number of tourist had been expected to rise by 24%.
Tourism employs between 50,000 to 60,000 people in Mongolia, but due to the coronavirus outbreak, unemployment in the sector is expected to grow.
Mongolia cancelled cultural and tourism events in March and April in order preventing spread of coronavirus.
