Most of the major intersections in the centre of Ulaanbaatar are severely congested, resulting in average speeds of 5–8 km/hour in the central section of Peace Avenue during peak hours. This makes driving on Peace Avenue – the city’s main thoroughfare – a real nightmare. In order to ease traffic congestion by 50 percent, the Traffic Control and Engineering Department has decided to close three left turns at the West Central Intersection, the Intersection of MUST – School of Mechanical Engineering and Transportation and the Flower Centre junction.
- Drivers will no longer be able to turn left at the West Central Intersection from north to Peace Avenue. According to the survey, only 70-80 cars per hour turn left onto this road. If turning left is banned, 766 cars in an hour will be able to drive straight from south to north; the expected decrease on road load will be 88 percent.
- Drivers are banned to turn left at the SMET Intersection from the south. This will help increase speed of car flow in route from south to north and add an additional lane.
3. Drivers cannot turn left at the Flower Centre intersection from the east. This will help decrease road load between the West Central Intersection and Mongol Post.
