The European Union, together with its Mongolian partners, has completed a EUR 1.1 million joint projects aimed at strengthening nuclear safety in Mongolia in accordance with the EU’s highest standards and best practice.
The project was financed through the EU’s Instrument for Nuclear Safety Cooperation and will strengthen the regulatory framework to ensure the safety of radioactive sources, establish system of control of nuclear materials and develop radiation emergency preparedness and a response plan.
Following the Chernobyl accident in 1986, the EU launched a nuclear safety programme under the Technical Assistance to the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) which, between 1991 and 2006, allocated some EUR1.3 billion to nuclear safety and security projects.
