Mongolian capital faces extreme winter weather

Often described as the “coldest capital city in the world,” Ulaanbaatar sometimes experiences temperatures dipping to -40C. This winter is going to confirm this claim to fame: the National Agency for Meteorology and Environmental Monitoring have issued a cold weather warning across the country from today (25 December).

According to meteorology agency, the nighttime temperature in the Songinokhairkhan and Yarmag Districts of Ulaanbaatar will drop to -39C while other districts will be -33C. Daytime temperatures will be -22-25C. This cold weather is expected to last until 1 January, 2019.

In the Darkhad Depression, the mountainous areas of Altai, Khangai, Khuvsgul and Khentei; in Khurenbelchir; in the upper reaches of the Zavkhan river; in the basins of the Ider, Tes, Tuul and Terelj rivers, the nighttime temperature will range from -40 to -45 degrees Celsius whereas the daytime temperature will be – 37 degrees Celsius.
