Mongolia to rehabilitate 219 victims of political repression

Mongolia has annually been observing a day of remembrance on 10 September for the country’s victims of political persecution since 1996.

According to the Central Intelligence Agency of Mongolia, more than 31 thousand people were reportedly repressed politically: over 10 thousand of whom have been rehabilitated. The actions of granting compensation are expected to be completed by December 31, 2020.

Currently, dossiers and documents relating to the remaining 1030 cases involving 1340 people who have undergone repression still need to be processed. This year, a total of 219 people are expected to be rehabilitated after being examined by the provincial record offices,  provincial courts as well as the prosecutor’s office.

In 1998 the Mongolian Parliament (State Great Khural) passed a law on rehabilitation and granting of compensation to victims of political repression. The great political repressions were held in Mongolia between 1937 and 1939, which corresponded to Stalin’s ‘Terror’ in the Soviet Union, and resulted in the almost total destruction of the Buddhist clergy across Mongolia.
