Heavy rain caused severe flooding in Bayan-Ulgii, a western province of Mongolia on 14-16 July. Downpours in the Bayan-Ulgii Province have affected more than 2,500 people and destroyed over 500 homes. Damages from the flooding have cost nearly MNT 10 billion, said the provincial governor. People who lost homes in flooding have been staying in the student dormitory of Khovd University and with relatives. In response to the crisis, the administration of the province has launched a donation campaign for families who lost their homes as well as to repair the 4th Provincial Kindergarten and the Professional Inspection Department.
The meteorological institute warned that the water levels in major rivers in the western, northern and central parts of the country have risen to dangerous levels. A matter of grave concern is that yet more heavy rain is expected in these areas.
