Nine child jockeys fell from their horses; three of them injuring themselves, on Sunday. The accidents took place during the Dunjingarav, a spring horse racing event held in Bayantal soum of Gobisumber province on 18 March. The racing began at 7.00 a.m. in the morning and finished at 9.00 p.m after sunset. Children aged between 10 and 13 participated as jockeys in the four age categories.
The Mongolian Cabinet banned horse races in winter due to the health and safety of child jockeys in January. Also, children below the age of 12 are prohibited from participating in all horse races.
Ironically the race was organised by the Mongolian Police Department at the request of the Federation of Mongolian Horse Racing Sport and Trainers. During the race, a total of 110 police officers with 23 vehicles and motorbikes as well as 25 officers from the National Emergency Management Agency and 25 officers of General Executive Agency of Court Decisions.
