According to an Ulaanbaatar Railway official, the joint stock company is planning build a new station on site of the ‘Thousand Cars’ Auto Market. The site was returned to Ulaanbaatar Railway ownership after the cars were forcibly removed on Wednesday with the help of the police. A large number of protesting auto-traders were arrested during the incident which took place ahead of the planned clearing of the site. The ‘Thousand Cars’ Auto Market was located nearby Ulaanbaatar railway station.
The Dayar Khas Company, which ran the auto market, had been renting the land from Ulaanbaatar Railways under a ten-year lease from 2006. The lease expired in 2016. The auto-traders considered that because they had invested so much into the market, they were not obliged to give it back.
The present Ulaanbaatar railway station was built in 1950. The new building will be a modern complex with a cinema, gaming centre, supermarkets and shops – all to meet the highest international standards. Funding for the construction is being discussed with the Russian shareholders who own 50 percent of Ulaanbaatar Railway Company.
