Prime Minister U.Khurelsukh who also heads the National Committee on Food Safety visited the Meat Market and Meat Impex companies earlier today (28 November). The committee is to hold a meeting tomorrow regarding the planned increase in meat export quotas. According to the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Light Industries, over 40 Mongolian companies produce meat products; ten of them are strong players.

According to 2016 statistics, the number of livestock reached 61.5 million; consisting of: 27.8 million sheep, 25.5 million goats, 3.6 million horses, 4.0 million cows and 400 thousand camels. This is enough for Mongolia to meet domestic meat demand and still export a further nine million livestock and significant volumes of meat.

During the year-to-date, Mongolia exported 21.5 thousand tonnes of meat to Russia, China, Kazakhstan, Japan, Iran and Qatar; this represents a five-fold increase on 2012.

The National Committee on Food Safety has set an export quota of 20 thousand tonnes of meat in 2018. Many countries have expressed an interest in Mongolian horse meat; for this reason the government will specifically support increasing exports of this product.
