Construction of Mongolia's new international airport is continuing despite the cold weather. The airport is located 60 kilometers south of Ulaanbaatar in the Khushigt Valley. Inspectors from the eleven working groups overseeing the construction are on site and are expected to deliver their assessment of progress on 18th of January.
The new international airport complex will have the capacity to receive three million passengers per year, a terminal with six jet bridges, modern services, runways able to receive airplanes 24/7 despite weather problems and harsh wind speeds, modern equipment, comprising 30 buildings including a control tower equipped with the latest technology, independent water treatment, water supply and heat distribution plants. The reason why Khushigt Valley was chosen for the airport is because officials plan to expand it in the future, adding up to 20 jet bridges, and increasing the capacity to receive 12 million passengers by receiving 22,000 airplanes per year; this naturally assumes that the number of passengers will significantly rise after the airport opens.
