Nearly 6000 young Mongolian nationals have been born in foreign countries; of this number, more than 2,800 have been naturalized in the UK, USA, Germany and Canada.

In accordance with the law currently in effect, Mongolia does not allow dual citizenship. In addition, if both of the parents of a child are Mongolian then the child is automatically Mongolian. However, the child cannot  maintain his or her Mongolian citizenship after turning the age of 18. For this reason, a draft amendment to the Law of Mongolia on Citizenship has been submitted  to Parliament for consideration. During the period from 2001 to 2015, Mongolian citizenship was restored to  a total of 1747 young nationals born in foreign countries.

At present, some 130,000 Mongolians face citizenship-related problems abroad every year. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs receives ceaseless requests, seeking a favorable legal environment for dual citizenship for Mongolians, according to Minister Ts.Munkh-Orgil. The Mongolian Parliament has been discussing the Law on Citizenship since 2009.
