Each year the International Day of Peace is observed around the world on 21 September. The UN General Assembly has declared this as a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, both within and among all nations and peoples.
Each of the religious communities in Mongolia were holding prayers and meditations for peace in their various places of worship. The ceremony was opened at 14.00 p.m. with a programme of prayers from all faiths represented in Mongolia. The Resident Coordinator of the United Nations in Mongolia, the President of Mongolia's Council of Religious Affairs and othrs participated in this important event.
The Day’s theme for 2016 is “The Sustainable Development Goals: Building Blocks for Peace.” The 17 Sustainable Development Goals were unanimously adopted by the 193 Member States of the United Nations at an historic summit of world’s leaders in New York in September 2015.
The Peace Bell in New York was cast in 1954 from coins donated by children from 60 countries. For half a century since then, the bell has sent a powerful message around the world about humankind's aspiration for peace. On "Peace Day" in Mongolia we were ringing our own Peace Bell to remind ourselves of the oneness of humankind, the oneness of all religions and the need for peace, unity and tolerance among the peoples of the world.
