The Mongolian government plans to slash the number of state-owned enterprises (SOEs) by one third in order to encourage private investment and set up a sovereign wealth fund. The government currently owes over 70 enterprises; however, many of these are inefficient and require additional expenses from state budget.
The Government Agency for Policy Coordination on State Property plans to privatize over thirty SOEs before the end of the year. The first six enterprises on the list are the following: the Industrial Complex, the Mongol Meat Corporation, the Mongol Farming Corporation, Mongol Stamp, and a sports centre. The issue has been presented to Cabinet for discussion.
