The Civil Will-Green Party has explained why it supports the DP view that in the proposed new election system, 50 MPs should be elected in proportion to the total votes received by parties while 26 would be chosen in the first-past-the-post way now followed. In a public statement the party says it has watched with regret that the MPP has done almost an about turn in its attitude to electoral reform in parliament.
Following the July 1 incidents in 2008, the MPP publicly acknowledged the need to change the system of election to Parliament. People still remember that the agreement made between the two parties to form a coalition government contained a clear provision that they would reform the parliament election system.
The Civil Will-Green Party appreciates that the DP is working on the promise, while the MPP has backed out of it. The statement warned that a failure by Parliament to adopt an amended law on election in the present session might seriously affect the way next year’s election is contested.
