The State Specialized Inspecting Agency has found
medicines being sold without being recorded in the state register and thus
without any quality guarantee. The country imports medicine from 40 countries
of Europe and Asia, apart from illegal import of mostly spurious drugs. The
result has been a steady increase in the number of drug poisoning cases every
year. Most of the 1,588 cases recorded between 2003 and 2009 were children
between 0 and 4. Mongolia does not record drug poisoning as a cause of death so
there is no knowing whether any of these cases was fatal.
