First Deputy Prime Minister N.Altankhuyag recently
visited some of the 114 business organizations in Bayan-Ulgii aimag that have
altogether received MNT1.5 billion in loans from the SME Fund in the last two
years. He also heard complaints that several loans given to officials’
relatives and friends have not been successfully utilized.
Among the units he visited were a brick factory that was set up with a loan of
MNT15 million, and a flour mill started with MNT400 million from the fund. The
latter, however, stopped working when it could no longer import wheat from
Russia. Some local people felt that now that Russia has lifted its export
restrictions the factory should be made to resume work, so that the local demand
for flour could be met. Bayan-Ulgii aimag is too far from Ulaanbaatar and it is
difficult to transport flour and rice there.
Two other enterprises he visited are seeking loans to expand their business.
One makes lemonade and bottled water, and the other is a wool processing
factory with 280 workers. This wants a loan to install better technology and to
establish a spinning mill.

Khovd aimag.
