The
Standing Committee on Justice today decided to discuss in Parliament the draft
amendments on the criminal law relating to some types of corruption. Speaker
D.Demberel agreed with several members that election-related corruption must be
curbed.

He,
however, opposed a provision in the draft that protects someone pleading guilty
from being convicted of giving bribes. The head of the President’s Office, D.Battulga,
had said the present system put pressure on citizens and organizations to give bribe
to state officials.

S.Erdene agreed and added that officials threaten and shout at those who are
unwilling to meet their demands. That is why those who give in should receive
some lenience. Such consideration should not apply to those who bribe officials
to get illegal things done.
