Minister of Foreign Affairs G.Zandanshatar has said the Ministry requested Russia to upgrade operations at the Khankh-Mond border point to international standards as early as 2003. A UN Convention supports the building of more storage space and a special zone for freight to and from landlocked countries. He was speaking at the Standing Committee on Security and Foreign Policy, and was answering on behalf of the Prime Minister a question MP Ts.Sedvanchig had asked S.Batbold about conditions at the border point of Khuvsgul aimag.

The Deputy Chief of the General Customs Office told the committee they would start work on introducing international standards on the Mongolian side if the Government asked them to. However, this issue would better be left to the Standing Committee on Justice which is discussing Government policy on border posts.

Sedvanchig urged the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade to take up the matter with Russia more urgently. Making Khankh an international border point would help in the growth of regional tourism.
