Heavy downpours have been hitting Mongolia since the beginning of July, triggering massive flooding in some areas. Unfortunately, a linear accelerator radiotherapy machine – LINAC for short – which is used for treating cancer patients, was ruined when flood water poured into the basement of the National Cancer Centre of Mongolia (NCC). The only LINAC in the country for 3D cancer treatment was being stored in the basement whilst the NCC building was being expanded. The LINAC, which costs USD 3 million and was an important part of a soft loan package from Japan, had not been used once!
