A joint working group on border cooperation between Russia and Mongolia has recently met. The discussions among representatives of the Mongolian Ministry of Justice and Home Affairs and the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs took place on 24 October in the capital of the Russian Republic of Buryatia, Ulan-Ude.
The two sides shared views and information regarding crimes committed in the border zone, measures for combating terrorism and extremism, fighting the illicit trade of drugs and narcotic substances, and strengthening border control to prevent cattle rustling. As a result of joint efforts, the number of livestock thefts across the border has declined. It was noted, that although the number of Mongolians who commit crimes while travelling to Russia has decreased, Mongolian visitors continue to be the victims of crimes.
During the meeting, the two sides decided to hold short-term training on fighting illegal drug trafficking and ensuring security in the cases of public events or extremist actions; instructors and trainers will be provided by the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs.
The next meeting of the joint working group will be held in 2018 in Mongolia.
