President Kh.Battulga has formed a working group for restoring the death penalty in Mongolia. The decision to change the law came after the horrible news of the rape of a 5-year-old girl by her step-father broke this week. This tragic case has shocked the nation.
Mr Battulga believes that Mongolian society has not progressed to the level at which capital punishment can be abolished; it should remain on the statute books until individuals are mature and society is stable enough.
Mongolia suspended capital punishment in 2012; prior to which, aggravated murder and child rape crimes were liable to the death penalty. Capital punishment was formally removed in the revised Criminal Code, which was adopted in 2015. The law came into effect on 1st of July, 2017.
