Today (6th of August), Mongolian lawmakers held an irregular parliamentary session to discuss issues related to the proposed dismissal of the Prime Minister. However, the parliamentary group of the Mongolian People’s Party has proposed that  the session be postponed for an indefinite period.

Dozens of lawmakers from Mongolia’s ruling party have called for the country’s prime minister and cabinet to step down because of an abuse of power. A petition to dissolve the Mongolian Parliament was signed by 33 members of the ruling Mongolian People’s Party (MPP), who have accused Prime Minister J.Erdenebat and other senior figures of breaking the law in pursuit of their own business and political interests.

Parliamentary Speaker M.Enkhbold issued a decree to hold the irregular session of the State Great Khural (parliament) between 30th of August and 7th of September, to discuss the proposed dismissal of the Prime Minister.  According to Mongolian law, if Cabinet presents a petition to dissolve the State Great Khural, the Parliamentary Standing Committee on State Structure must hold meeting within a week and Parliament itself must hold a session within 14 days.

The MPP won by a landslide in the 2016 elections, taking 65 out of 76 seats in the national parliament, and formed the cabinet headed by J.Erdenebat, who is now alleged to have used his political powers to spy on fellow party members.
