According to an inter-governmental agreement, the Mongolia-Chinese border crossings will be closed on 30th of May for the Chinese Dragon Boat Festival and 1st of June for Mongolian Children’s Day.
The Dragon Boat Festival, also called Duanwu or Tuen Ng Festival, is a traditional holiday which has been observed annually over 2,000 years, in China to commemorate Qu Yuan (340-278 BC), an ancient Chinese patriotic poet. His death is always marked annually on the fifth day on the fifth lunar month; yet people celebrate the festival in various ways. Some famous Chinese people like Wu Zixu and Cao E also died on this day, so in certain areas, people also commemorate these giants during the festival.
June 1st is celebrated around the world as the International Day for Child Protection. In Mongolia we refer to the day as Children’s Day, or as Mother’s and Children’s Day. On this day, people show appreciation for mothers and children all across the country. The first-ever children’s organisation and movement in Mongolia was established on May 5th, 1925, at the initiation of the great writer D.Natsagdorj; it was immediately supported across the country. Mongolia joined the Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1990 as the fifth member, and developed the Law on Protecting Children’s Rights according to the convention’s views. The law was ratified on May 8th 1996.
