The new railway project was presented to party groups in Parliament by the Government last Thursday. It proposes to establish a railroad from east to west, connecting Tavantolgoi-Sainshand-Choibalsan and ultimately leading to Northeast Asian countries. This is connected to processing natural resources from deposits such as Tavantolgoi and Oyutolgoi, instead of just exporting them raw to China. The Prime Minister said this railroad will help Mongolia derive the maximum benefit from the coal, copper, uranium and oil deposits in the Gobi and will open the doors to economic cooperation with Northeast Asia.

He said reducing the export of raw materials like coal and iron ore does not mean that a direct road from Tavantolgoi to China will not be established.

DP group leader Ch.Saikhanbileg said the Government appears to be proposing to build two railroads. Now Parliament must make the final decision. He said his group would support the Government.

MPRP group leader D.Lundeejantsan said a decision will be taken after considering geopolitics, national interests and the needs for and of processing factories.
