Alex Ganbaa moved to the United
States in late August and Joshua Gurbazar two weeks ago. Both are from Mongolia
and are learning English. They have supporting each other in their language
class as they can relate with each other on several levels.

Because of his more limited knowledge of the
English language, Gurbazar takes the help of his friend, who translates
complicated conversations that take place around him. “He [Gurbazar]
understands basic conversations,” said their teacher Suzanne Sharif. “But for
the complicated conversations I ask Alex to translate.”

Ganbaa and Gurbazar extend their friendship outside of school and class.
Ganbaa, who arrived in the United States first, is pleased that he is able to
help his friend. “[I am] glad I’m here to help,” said Ganbaa.

According to Ganbaa, Gurbazar displays talent in soccer and would like to
play for the school team. Both students describe the change as different
culturally and educationally. Although the change was hard, they seem to find
the studies easier, giving them an additional benefit.

“Joshua is picking up the language really fast,” said senior Felicia
McPhaul, who is Gurbazar’s student teacher.  Senior Heather Staniszewski helps Ganbaa with
his English.  “Alex is always so
energetic and willing to learn,” said Staniszewski. “He inspires me to try new
things with his fearless hardworking nature.”
