The tax on the number of livestock, imposedin 1998, was discontinued after a year but now there is talk of reviving it. The tax is not the same as the pastureland
tax, and is often called the “foot tax” as it is computed on the basis of the
number of animals a herder owns.

Ministries and offices have been asked to see collection of the tax can resume
next year. It will be received by local administrations and the amount would be
allocated for local development, said the President’s advisor L.Dashdorj. If a
herder pays MNT500 for erach sheep, the tax would contribute MNT54 billion to
local budgets.
