Following Russia’s
announcement on a ban on wheat exports, the price of flour in Mongolia went up by
MNT 3,500-MNT6,000 per ton over the weekend. Some shops in Narantuul, Bars and
Bumbugur markets refused to sell flour until they could raise prices. A 25-kg
sack of flour that cost MNT16,500 on Friday fetched MNT20,00-MNT21,000 on
Saturday. Retailers say three companies — Altan Taria, Ulaanbaatar Guril and
Atar Guril — determine the price of flour.
The Ministry of Food,
Agriculture and Light Industry has asked people not to go for panic buying as
Mongolia’s own wheat harvest should be enough to meet domestic demand fully.
