India is numerically
the largest democracy of the world and the Speaker of the directly elected
lower house of the bicameral Indian Parliament, Mrs. Meira Kumar, is now on an
official visit to Mongolia at the head of a delegation of MPs.  They were formally received at the airport on
Sunday by Deputy Speaker N.Enkhbold.

Mrs. Kumar called on Prime Minister S.Batbold on Monday . The Prime
Minister said that this year marks the 55th anniversary of bilateral diplomatic
relations but the historical and cultural ties between the two countries are
over a thousand years old. He hoped the present visit would lead to expansion
of relations and expressed Mongolia’s interest in collaborating in IT , nuclear
energy, and  mining, beyond the
traditional areas of cooperation like  parliamentary relations, culture, education,
and health.  Mongolia wants to send more
students, specialists, and professionals to India for study and training.

Mrs. Kumar applauded Mongolia’s success in following the path of parliamentary
democracy, and said the country offered a lot of lessons to other countries.
She revealed that India had decided to double the number of scholarships to Mongolian
students.

The visiting delegation laid a wreath before the statue of Sukhbaatar and
paid tribute to Chinggis Khaan before being received by Parliament Speaker D.Demberel.
The Mongolian Speaker pointed out that
“relations between our countries have been developing successfully…
and commercial ties and the volume of trade have been increasing as well. Some
200 students and the same number of monks are studying in India. Mongolian
state servants have received foreign languages and IT training, thanks to great
efforts of successive Indian Ambassadors to Mongolia.”

Mrs. Kumar thanked the Speaker for
inviting her and for the warm welcome. She recalled how regular high-level
visits and inter-parliamentary ties played a main role in strengthening
bilateral relations. She offered opportunities for Mongolian parliamentary
officials to study in India.

Among those who attended the meeting were D.Lundeejantsan, head of the
MPRP group in Parliament; Ch.Saikhanbileg, head of the DP group; D.Odbayar and
R.Gonchigdorj, head  and deputy head
respectively of the Mongolia-India inter-parliamentary group;  V.Enkhbold, the Ambassador of Mongolia to
India; and Ts.Sharavdorj, Secretary-General of the Parliamentary Office.
