The priceless intellectual heritage the great treatise “Ganjur” has become a registered UNESCO Documentary heritage.

In 1992, UNESCO launched the “Memory of the World Programme” to protect and promote the world”s unique documentary heritage through preservation and access.

Ganjur written in nine precious stones, submitted from Mongolia, was added to the UNESCO Documentary heritage by the International Consultative Committee for the Memory of the World program which was held in Gwangju, Korea, between June 18th and 21st.

There are 54 new additions to the UN educational and cultural agency”s Memory of the World Register including documentation on Holocaust victims, a collection of Buddhist scriptures written on stones from Myanmar, two rare manuscripts from Nepal and diaries belonging to Ernesto Che Guevara.

The priceless intellectual heritage Ganjur is a large collection of over 1161 works, compiled in 108 volumes, on great and small subjects of traditional Buddhism (philosophy, technology, logic, medicine, philology, astrology, model dance, poetics, Abhidarma, composition) created by ancient Indian and Tibetan scientists and panditas. It is the world”s only copy and is an important part of the intellectual history of humanity and demonstrates a remarkable traditional method of Mongolia in creating books by using precious stones. This sutra includes many pictures of deities, human beings and animals including birds, tigers, tortoise. It is a finely painted sample in a variety of colors, expressing the ideals of philosophy, beauty and mercy. It proves that ancient and medieval Mongolian artists understood profoundly the compassion of Buddhism and power of spiritual intelligence.

Currently 299 documents of cultural historical importance have been added to UNESCO`s Memory of the World Register for the Memory of the World Programme.

Including Ganjur Mongolia has also added Altan tovch by Luvsandanzan and Mongol shunkhan danjur in 2011 to the UNESCO Heritage.
