
The museum building, built in 1953 is now structurally unsound and is at risk of collapsing. Officials of the State Specialized Inspection Agency came to the conclusion that the museum building is no longer persistent to earthquakes and warned to halt promptly the museums activity after three inspections through the museum between 2007-2011. The Museum authority submitted the specialized officials` conclusion to the Ministry of Culture, Sport and Tourism and the Consumer board. The Ministry had the conclusion analyzed in the Reconstruction laboratory of the Mongolian University of Science and Technology in 2012. The result of the analysis confirmed that the Specialized officials` conclusion was right.
The Director of the museum, N.Zorigtbaatar, said that A block of the museum was the public section, but this section was considered in a stand-by condition. There are 1,250 showpieces only in this section.
The Mongolian Natural History Museum has now shut down in accordance with a notice delivered by the State Specialized Inspection Agency earlier in 2013 to close the museum by April 1st from a decree by the Minister of Culture, Sport and Tourism.
The museum authority is considering to store the 10,000 showpieces in packages in a fund.
The Ministry of Culture, Sport and Tourism along with the Ministry of Economic Development have been planning large projects for five cultural buildings for the National Academic Ensemble of Folk Song and Dance, a Folk Culture Palace, the Mongolian National Library and the Mongolian Natural History Museum.
