An accident occurred in Nalaikh coal mine causing a death and three fatal injuries on Monday May 13th. According to an official source, a 40 year old miner lost consciousness due to lack of air after entering the mine. Three of his family members also entered the mine in the hopes of rescuing the man, but fainted too. The staff of the National Emergency Management Agency found one dead and three unconscious. The three were delivered directly to hospital for emergency treatment.

The State Specialized Inspection Agency suspended mining operations of 185 mines temporarily in March.

Only 28 out of over 200 underground coal mines that operate in Nalaikh district have the required licenses. Almost 1500 miners work in the coal mines in Nalaikh district but accidents occur often because labor security and working conditions are poor.

Over the past decade it has been estimated that over 200 miners have died and numerous injuries have been caused in the mines.
