Urgent measures to bring meat prices down

The Government meeting
yesterday instructed Food, Agriculture and Light Industry Minister T.Badamjunai
to take urgent measures to check the rise in meat price. For a start, he is
expected to arrange for increased supply of meat from Khentii, Dornod and
Sukhbaatar aimags. He is also likely to hold regular meat fairs in Ulaanbaatar,
twice a month in spring, and once in all the other seasons, to bring buyers and
sellers together directly.

The quantity of meat to be
kept in reserve has also been refixed. Beginning from next year the quota
for  Ulaanbaatar will be 12,000 tons, for
Darkhan and Erdenet 1,000 tons each, and for all other aimags 100 tons. These
reserves will be sold in spring.

One reason for the present
meat price rise is said to be the failure to stock enough meat. In 2008 the
government stocked around 7000 tons but after a warm winter and spring, this
was finished only in July 2009. This led the government last year to stock only
2,000 tons which has proved inadequate because almost 8 million animals died.
All the meat was finished by May 15, within a month of the stocks being
released.
