Parliament passed the Driver Responsibility Law to regulate traffic rules and protect the rights of passengers and drivers last October. The law was implemented on October 1st, 2012 and imposes a fine of 140’400 MNT, the national minimum wage, to any driver who fails to have his or her car insured.  Our journalist spoke with mayor S.Enkhbat, the director of the Public Relations Department of Traffic Police Administration.

-According to the law, traffic police must impound a driver’s car who fails to have their car insured since October 1st.  How many cars have been impounded in the last two days?

-Traffic police are working hard to control and check regulations and we received a report that not a single vehicle has been impounded yet.  It seems like drivers had their cars insured well.

-If it is found that a driver did not have his or her car insured, should he or she be fined the 140’400 MNT?

-Some drivers might think that this law is too tough; however, drivers must understand this regulation protects them from risk.  All drivers should have their car insured or their vehicle will be impounded and they will need to pay a fine.  If you do not have your car insured you will pay the 140’400 MNT fine and only after you pay for driver responsibility insurance can you get your car back.
