Under the local football fraternity”s radar, David Low has
trawled the globe in search of playing opportunities.
But, later this month, that journey – which has taken him to Thailand,
Australia, Hungary, Germany and the United States – will see the 28-year-old
utility player become the first Singaporean to play in Mongolia when he turns
out for top flight club Khoromkhon FC.
“I honestly knew very little about Mongolian football but playing for the
club would be a good stepping stone for my career,” said Low, who was
previously with Tampines Rovers” Prime League squad and also underwent trials
with Geylang United and the now-defunct Super Reds.
“I have played in the Prime League (under-23 division) for Tampines Rovers
but the wages were low if you weren”t in the S-League side. So, whenever
opportunities came from overseas, I took them so I could move forward.
“I”ve trained with Chonburi FC in Thailand and played in Australia
(Football West State League Division 1, with South West Phoenix FC) but
Khoromkhon is competing for a spot in the AFC President”s Cup (third-tier
regional tournament) and it would be great for my career if I could play in
that tournament.”
Based in the Mongolian capital Ulaan Baatar, Khoromkhon finished fourth in the
eight-team Mongolian Premier League.
They harbour high hopes for the 2012 season that kicks off on June 27, with Low
and five other still-unnamed foreign players they have signed.
Brokering the three-month deal – the season lasts three months – is Trebol
Sports International, and its sporting director Bryan Lim said: “Mongolian
clubs usually sign players from Russia, China and Nigeria and, while working
with Khoromkhon, we”ve also tried to help Singaporean players get opportunities
overseas.
“With the club”s ambition, we believe this will be a good stepping stone
for David.”
Low, who has played in the United States League”s second division, Germany”s
Uberliga and Singapore”s National Football League, is one of a few hopefuls –
including Sivaneswaran Ramalingam, Hanafi Ghazali and LionsXII midfielder
Pravin Gunasagaran – who have looked beyond Singapore for opportunities.
He leaves for Mongolia this Sunday.
