Members of the Anti-Corruption Group in
Parliament briefed media on the open hearing planned for May 12 by the Standing
Committee on Legislation. The head of the committee, B.Bat-Erdene, and MPs
Kh.Temuujin and J.Sukhbaatar said that a working group has been established to review
financial reports, and to fix responsibility for violation of law as also for
failure to enforce the anti-corruption law. J.Sukhbaatar is leading the working
group. There is another working group led by MP Kh.Jekei to make recommend
action on the basis of financial reports against officials.

According to Kh.Temuujin, the open hearing
will concentrate on three subjects: method of preparing the financial report;
what violations were detected; and what to do with those who did not submit a
report on their financial doings. Certain officials will give information on
this matter during the hearing. The open hearing will be organized every year,
during the spring session of the Parliament. And during the autumn session, the
actions and measures to improve corruption fighting would be discussed.

MP J.Sukhbaatar said the corruption index of Mongolia is
getting worse. “We are living in a society of corruption. We ourselves have to improve
matters,” he said. B.Bat-Erdene said 98-99 percent of authorities give their financial
report now, after the Anti-Corruption Authority started taking it.

Amazingly, after the press conference, Minister
for Internal Affairs Ts.Nyamdorj called MP J.Sukhbaatar to his room and accused
him of “becoming a bodyguard” of Kh.Temuujin. According to some sources he told
the MP that he had no business talking about human rights or a minister’s
conduct. He is also believed to have pulled the MP’s tie. When Sukhbaatar left
his room there were red marks on his neck and was disheveled.
