Emergency workers in the Nalaikh district received a call at noon on Tuesday reporting that two miners were unconscious in an unlicensed mine in the third khoroo of the district. Rescuers were able to revive one of the miners, a 45-year-old man, but the other miner, 27, died shortly after arriving at the hospital. An estimated 20 so-called “ninja” miners were killed due to unsafe working conditions in unlicensed mines in 2011.
