Women candidates will face challenges getting elected

The new election law requires 20 percent of a party’s candidates for Parliament – 15 of 76 candidates- to be women.

But women candidates will still face challenges winning one of the 48 directly-elected seats. They will likely be running against much better-financed male candidates, though experts say it is possible a few women could win seats.

The remaining 28 seats will be determined by voting for political parties, and candidates who finish in tenth place or higher are eligible for those seats, but men and women who finish lower are not.

Also, candidates who meet a certain threshold for the 28 party seats could be reassigned to one of the 48 directly-elected seats. This could effectively reduce the number of available seats, depending on how large the majority party’s margin of victory is. In other words, it could further reduce the chances of a woman being elected to Parliament. If that happens, critics say, the women’s quota will become just another number in the election law.
