
Officials said 11,570 teachers from 93 secondary schools and 74 kindergartens have joined the strike that began December 12. They also said 36 unions from local settlements’ schools, kindergartens, and training centers have submitted their signatures to support the strike.
Teachers from schools in the Baganuur and Nalaikh districts are also striking. Also, teachers from Bugant, Khutul, and Saikhan soums of Selenge aimag have held demonstrations in support of the strike.
In September, the government agreed to increase teachers’ salaries by MNT 80,000 beginning March 1, 2012, and by 23 percent beginning May 1, 2012. But the teachers say they want raises beginning January 1.
