During discussion of a draft law on the police organization, members of the Standing Committee on Legislation said police must work more transparently to earn people’s trust. There was a demand to have the Ministry of Internal Affairs appoint the Director of Police, instead of the Prime Minister. Members wanted the Minister to be more involved in police actions during any emergency.
MPs wanted new equipment for the police. Their plastic shields and plastic helmets are not enough protection against angry protesters. MPs felt police should be allowed to use air guns if necessary. The police also do not have their own helicopter to use in an emergency and have to rent one for MNT 1.5-2 million.
MP Kh.Temuujin wanted police to be taken off the duty of guarding UN and diplomatic buildings and places like the Mongolbank. The work should be handed over to security companies. His suggestion was not approved because security companies are not allowed to use fire arms.
