According to earlier research, a total of 30 underground water reserves have been discovered in soums in Umnugobi aimag, including Gurvantes, Tsogttsetsii, Bayan-Ovoo and Khanbogd. An enrichment factory, a power plant, and new settlements are all planned for the region in the near future.
The NDRC has determined that those new projects makes it necessary to definitively determine the future infrastructure needs and demand for water in Umnugobi aimag. The NDRC says the demand for water should be met in an environmentally responsible way, and additional exploration for new water sources should be conducted.
The NDRC also says treated wastewater should be taken into account when considering the mining sector’s needs for water.
The Orkhon-Gobi and Kherlen-Gobi projects of the National Water Program will be implemented in the Gobi region through a public-private partnership. After implementation of the projects, it is estimated that 72,800 cubic meters of water could be supplied daily to the mining and industrial sectors in the region.
