The round steel object, with a 7.5-meter diameter and with the number 02728 on it, that fell from the sky in Buren soum of Tuv province on February 19 was most possibly a dead satellite, according to experts in the team who brought it to Ulaanbaatar on Tuesday. There were no casualties because it fell in an empty field.

Director of the Disaster Fighting Department at the General Emergency Authority S.Tsogtbaatar said the meteorology center will make further analysis but it was not dangerous. There are some 9,000 satellites in orbit that are no longer used.

Ts.Manaljav heard a very loud report. He observed the scene from his house with binoculars before going to see it.

Ts.Borbaatar of the Military Headquarters said it might not be possible to say which country the satellite belonged to. An expert in the Meteorology Center said there is no way to predict when a broken or malfunctioning satellite will fall. International law says every country must be responsible for the satellites it sends up often the country loses control. These are called satellite remnants.
