
Ban congratulated Elbegdorj on the 50th anniversary of Mongolia’s membership in the UN, noting that Mongolia is one of the organization’s most active member countries. He also expressed his satisfaction with Mongolia’s progress toward democracy. Ban said the UN and Mongolia have much work to do together, such as the work of the Research Center for Landlocked Developing Countries.
For his part, Elbegdorj congratulated Ban on his reelection as Secretary-General in June. The president also suggested pro-democracy initiatives and anti-corruption measures in Mongolia’s capacity of heading the Democratic Community organization.
Elbegdorj also said a campaign will be launched in Mongolia with the help of the UN to reduce alcohol consumption. He also suggested increase the number of Mongolians employed by the UN. Ban agreed that, after fifty years of membership, the number of Mongolians employed by the organization should be more than 16.
Ban also welcomed Mongolia’s input on climate change issues.
