Ulaanbaatar cable car service to launch in December

The cable car system is a new form of urban transport for Mongolia. Although plans to introduce a cable car service had been discussed for many years, the project had remained unrealized until recently.

The project officially got underway in March 2025, when construction of the cable car system began. Currently, construction is about 80% complete.

A total of 98 cabins will operate on the cable car line. All of the cabins have already arrived in Mongolia and are currently being stored in the depot. The main system test is scheduled for September, and once all testing is successfully completed, the cable car is expected to begin carrying passengers in December.

Each cabin has a maximum load capacity of 750 kilograms and can accommodate 10 passengers. The journey between the two stations will take approximately 10 to 12 minutes, and the system will be capable of transporting 2,320 passengers per hour.

One of the most frequently asked questions from the public is whether Mongolia’s power grid can handle the additional demand, as the cable car will operate entirely on electricity. According to project officials, the system will run on 100% electricity and will be supported by both a primary and a backup power supply.

Safety has also been a major concern among residents, with many asking how the system will ensure passenger safety and whether it can operate during Mongolia’s harsh winters.

The project is being carried out by POMA Group of France, which has implemented more than 800 similar cable car projects in over 90 countries around the world.

Both stations will be equipped with numerous safety sensors to monitor operations. Emergency response measures have also been prepared for potential equipment failures and natural disasters. The cable cars will operate at a speed of 6 meters per second, and the speed can be reduced further in emergency situations.

The cable car project is being financed through a highly concessional loan from the French government. The loan has a 40-year repayment period with an interest rate of 0.0076%.

For the first three years after the system enters service, the French side will supply equipment and spare parts and will also be responsible for maintenance and repair work in the event of any technical failures.
