The year 2025 marks the 80th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations. In the first half of the 20th century, humanity suffered two world wars and learned painful lessons. Out of this emerged the United Nations. Eighty years later today, the UN has grown into an organization of 193 member states, becoming the most universal, representative and authoritative intergovernmental organization in the world. It plays an irreplaceable role in safeguarding global peace and security and promoting common development.
As a founding member of the United Nations, China has always been committed to peaceful development, taken an active part in global affairs, upheld the UN’s status and authority, and worked to advance the well-being of humanity.
1.China is committed to practicing multilateralism and providing global public goods for the international community.
In a world undergoing changes and turbulence, President Xi Jinping, with a vision for humanity and an understanding of the trend of the times, put forward the concept of building a community with a shared future for humanity. For eight consecutive years, this concept has been written into UN General Assembly resolutions and declarations of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Summit, and included eight times in BRICS Leaders’ Declarations. Its core message has also been incorporated into the UN’s Pact for the Future, making it a significant global public good of our time. UN Secretary-General António Guterres has stated that the goal of practicing multilateralism is building a human community with a shared future.
President Xi has also put forward the Global Development Initiative (GDI), the Global Security Initiative (GSI), the Global Civilization Initiative (GCI), and the Global Governance Initiative (GGI). These initiatives reaffirm China’s commitment to multilateralism, uphold a people-centered and win-win approach, and contribute Chinese wisdom and solutions to addressing global challenges, tackling pressing issues, and promoting a more just and equitable global governance system.
2.China stands firmly with the Global South and takes concrete steps to promote unity and progress among developing countries.
As an important member of the Global South, China works with the Group of 77 and the Non-Aligned Movement and promotes the expansion of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and BRICS mechanisms to enhance the representation and voice of developing countries.
China advocates the vision of common, comprehensive, cooperative and sustainable security, and advocates a new path to security that chooses dialogue, partnership and win-win results over confrontation, alliance and zero-sum game. China is the second-largest contributor to both the UN regular budget and peacekeeping mission, and the largest contributor of peacekeepers among the permanent members of the Security Council. This year, China also worked with over 30 countries to establish the International Mediation Institute.
As a promoter of inclusive economic globalization, China has reduced its overall tariff to 7.3% and granted zero-tariff treatment to 100% of taxable items from all least developed countries with which it has diplomatic relations. High-quality Belt and Road cooperation now covers over 150 countries and international organizations. China’s contribution to global growth remains around 30%. China’s new development brings new opportunities to the world, and Chinese modernization offers valuable experience and inspiration for modernization in the Global South.
Committed to advancing the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, China promotes technological cooperation to empower global development and supports the green transition worldwide. China’s Global Development and South-South Cooperation Fund has financed over 160 projects in more than 60 developing countries, benefiting more than 30 million people. One month ago, Premier Li Qiang announced at the 80th UN General Assembly that China will work with the UN to set up a China-UN Global South-South Development Facility and provide it with 10 million USD in budgetary support. China will also partner with the United Nations Development Programme to establish a global center for sustainable development in Shanghai.
Ten days ago, China hosted the Global Women’s Summit. President Xi announced that in the next five years, China will donate another 10 million USD to UN Women; earmark a quota of 100 million USD in China’s Global Development and South-South Cooperation Fund for implementing development cooperation projects for women and girls in collaboration with international organizations; launch 1,000 “small and beautiful” livelihood programs with Chinese assistance that take women and girls as priority beneficiaries. These practical steps are giving strong impetus to the advancement of women, especially in developing countries.
3.China works hand in hand with the UN system to support Mongolia’s sustainable development.
Mongolia, a close neighbor and important Belt and Road partner of China, is a key focus of China’s development assistance. China maintains close collaboration with the UN system to support Mongolia’s economic growth and livelihood development. With funding from the Global Development and South-South Cooperation Fund, China has carried out three projects in Mongolia. In 2024, in cooperation with UNDP Mongolia, China donated forest fire-fighting equipment and helped strengthen Mongolia’s firefighting capacity. In May this year, China, together with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and the Mongolian Red Cross Society (MRCS), launched the project to support Mongolia’s climate adaptation, benefiting 20,000 herders. In September, China and UNDP jointly initiated a project to upgrade ger-district in Ulaanbaatar with solar-powered heating systems, bringing warmth and comfort to 500 local households in winter.
The Chinese Embassy has also arranged a training program in China for Mongolian herders involved in UNDP’s ENSURE project, and coordinated with Chinese enterprises to provide tablets and GPS watches for children in remote areas within UNICEF programs.
Great visions requires concrete actions. China will continue to deepen cooperation with the UN, support the UN in playing its central role in international affairs, stand up for fairness and justice, promote cooperation for global development, and work together with the international community toward the goal of building a community with a shared future for humanity.
